What does home care in Toronto cost?
Eldercare charges an hourly rate with a four-hour minimum shift, and there is no separate fee for Registered Nurse case management. Cost depends on how many hours of care you need each week and the level of support involved. Call 416-482-8292 and we can explain rates for your situation.
Is the care supervised by a nurse?
Yes. A Registered Nurse assesses your parent, writes the care plan, selects and supervises the caregivers, and visits your parent on a regular basis. The nurse is your main point of contact and coordinates with your parent's doctor and pharmacist. If your nurse identifies a change that needs urgent medical attention, we coordinate immediately with your physician or direct you to emergency services. This nursing oversight is included at no additional charge.
How quickly can home care start?
In most cases a Registered Nurse can assess your parent quickly, sometimes the same day depending on the circumstances, and care can start soon after the plan is agreed. If you are arranging care after a hospital discharge and need support urgently, tell us on the call and we will move quickly.
Can you provide care in languages other than English?
Yes. Our caregivers speak eight languages, and we match a caregiver who can speak with your parent in the language they are most comfortable in. Language and cultural fit are part of how the Registered Nurse selects the right person for each family.
Do you provide care in retirement homes and hospitals too?
Yes. Eldercare provides one-on-one care wherever your parent lives, including private homes, condominiums, retirement residences, long-term care homes, and hospital rooms. The same Registered Nurse case management applies in every setting.

Home care in Toronto — given the choice, many seniors would prefer to stay at home
People often ask us how they'll know when it's time to move a senior to a Retirement or Nursing home. With the proper care, even seniors with significant care needs can usually remain at home – providing the care is supervised by experienced and knowledgeable healthcare professionals.
In fact, an RBC survey found that 88 per cent of retired 50+ year olds surveyed, would choose staying at home instead, with care as needed, over other options.
For some people moving out of their long-time home to a senior specific setting like a retirement home or Long Term Care Facility (Nursing Home) represents a loss of control and independence.
And since both Long Term Care Facilities and Retirement Homes are places where seniors congregate in shared spaces, residents are more likely to be exposed to Enteric (gastrointestinal) and Respiratory (including influenza) outbreaks.

For married couples Long Term Care Facilities present additional challenges. We are not aware of any allowance for a married couple to be admitted, as a couple, to Long Term Care Facilities on a preferred basis. This means, if you have a 95 year old father, and a 92 year old mother, who have been married for say 70 years – there is no provision in the current Ontario healthcare system for them to be admitted to the same Long Term Care Facility.
Your situation is unique. When you call, we will want to understand the challenges you are facing so that we can be of help. Below are the steps we take when arranging care for seniors in private homes, condominiums and apartments.
Step 1 – During the initial phone inquiry we'll ask
Who you are calling about (friend, relative etc.), their age, recent health issues, mobility, medications, where they're located (we currently provide care throughout the GTA), and if they live in a condo, bungalow or multi story house (which can impact their mobility etc.)
What has brought you to the point where you think care is needed – has there been recent physical change such as a rapid loss of weight, a fall(s), surgery, a sudden change in cognitive status etc.?

If the senior requiring care is "on board" and prepared to accept care? If the senior requiring care is competent.
How soon you want to have care in place.
Step 2 – Assessment by a Registered Nurse
If you and the Registered Nurse (see above) agree that it would be helpful to go the next step, a no-charge, no-obligation on-site assessment will be arranged. This assessment allows the Registered Nurse to meet with the senior requiring care and assess their condition from a Registered Nurse in the community point of view.
The assessment also provides an opportunity for you and the client, or anyone else involved in care decisions, to ask additional questions.
Step 3 – Care plan – proposed by the Registered Nurse
The plan will include identifying desired outcomes and the responsibilities of the caregivers. The Nurse will propose a schedule for care, including duration and frequency of shifts.
A Registered Nurse will be assigned to case manage all care. The Registered Nurse will be your key contact person and will be involved with selecting the appropriate caregivers and supervising all care. She will also personally visit the client on a regular basis.

Step 4 – The Care Agreement
You will be asked to sign a care agreement that, in essence, says that you are hiring us to provide care and have agreed to our rate. There is no additional fee for the involvement of the Registered Nurse Case Manager.
You are not locked into a set number of weeks or number of hours per week (minimum shift is 4 hours). Invoices can be paid by cheque or electronically through any of the major banks.
Step 5 – The care at home Begins
With the agreement signed, a Registered Nurse Case Manager will identify caregivers with the appropriate skill set, personality and availability, schedule staff and implement the plan of care.
