Eldercare Home Health was recently contacted by the Friends of Sunnybrook, a group whose members have a veteran family member currently residing at Sunnybrook Veterans Centre and wish to advocate on behalf of other WWII and Korean vets still out in the community.

These vets may need long term care, but are not aware that there is currently no wait list at the Centre.

In fact there are more than 40 available beds in both nursing home level and continuing complex care.

Sunnybrook is a wonderful residence for veterans, both male and female. Registered nurses look after residents at Sunnybrook, and the ratio of nurses to residents is excellent. The caring, personal attention from nursing staff, doctors, physiotherapists and occupational therapists is augmented by the many recreational programs offered in art, music, ceramics, horticulture, photography and woodworking. There are always lots of activities to keep you busy. Daily live entertainment in Warriors Hall is enjoyed equally by residents and their families. The beautiful garden with numerous ponds and waterfalls offers a tranquil backdrop for summer barbeques or just relaxing with nature.

Sunnybrook was built just for veterans, and the residents enjoy the camaraderie that comes from sharing similar history and military backgrounds with other vets. The atmosphere of the facility reflects the reverence and support that is offered from all in the community.

One resident’s wife writes: “The Veterans Residence is part of the history of WW2 and the Korean War. It serves and honours our Canadian Veterans. Just look at the mural of Flanders Fields in the Lobby. The individual uniforms, the pictures of the air planes, the history of the Great Escape, the log books…all donated with the express purpose of honouring and remembering our Veterans. Students come here to learn and engage with veterans. To see the living history of WW2 and the Korean war. Cadets. Different organizations sponsor special days. The Scottish Highlanders play their pipes. This is what Sunnybrook Veterans Residence means to our community at large. “
